By Brittany Wallman / South Florida Sun Sentinel The march of redevelopment continues in northwest Fort Lauderdale, with millions in public funds fueling the building spree.Tuesday, the city gave out another $2.1 million to remake the decades-old American Legion hall, build affordably priced townhouses, subsidize office space and spark creation of jobs for people who live in the northwest.The subsidies, mostly in the form of forgivable loans, are in addition to millions given to developers over the past two years. A few of the other recipients: Sistrunk Market and Brewery, a $1.4 million forgivable loan; Six13 tower, a $7 million forgivable loan; and Hotel d’Arts, a $3 million subsidy. In addition, Tuesday night, commissioners approved a site plan for a new YMCA on Sistrunk Boulevard, a project receiving $10 million in public funds. Join us for the kick-off on Friday, August 23, 2019 on NW 10th Terrace & Sistrunk Boulevard from5:30p.m. to 9:00p.m. This FREE community event is hosted by Chico the Virgo of HOT105 and will feature music by DJ Lucky C, live entertainment from the R&B Group Deep Fried Funk Band, art, a variety of food trucks, merchandise vendors, and much more. The Fort Lauderdale CRA is working to preserve and enhance significant landmarks on Sistrunk Blvd. The Robert Bethal American Legion Post 220, located at 1455 Sistrunk Blvd will undergo a substantial renovation and expansion funded in part by the CRA.  Improvements to the building will include an expansion from 960 square feet to 2,544 square feet.  The new and improved building will feature a contemporary, open and attractive look with high ceilings and windows. In addition, the building will house a large area for meetings and special events, a new modern kitchen, new handicap accessible restrooms, an outdoor social gathering and event area, office and storage space. These much needed improvements are long overdue. On July 9, 2019, the Fortlauderdale CRA Board of Commissioners approved $2.8 million in incentives to the developers of Thrive Progresso. The funding will help to revitalize an industrial area into a vibrant urban business district. Thrive Progresso will feature over 60,000 square feet of office, flex, and retail space on approximately 3.5 acres of land. Funding will be also be utilized to  make streetscape improvements. The Thrive Progresso project will be located in the heart of the Progresso neighborhood.The buildings where the Thrive Progresso project will be located were originally constructed as warehouse space and, until recently, were occupied by a variety of small businesses consisting of automobile repair garages, auto body/paint shops, rag shops, and other similar uses.
