18 Sep Historic Sistrunk seeks memorabilia from residents
It’s not the Antiques Roadshow, but organizers of the From Past to Present Historic Sistrunk Collection Day Party can’t wait to see what artifacts of the city’s historically black community have been hiding away in residents’ homes.
The group is asking people with items to bring them to the event from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale Negro Chamber of Commerce, 1021 NW Sistrunk Blvd. People can choose to donate or loan the items to the project, or just have any documents scanned and returned.
The event is part of a new effort to rebrand the city’s northwest community as Historic Sistrunk. It is being sponsored by the city’s Northwest Progresso Flagler Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board and the recently formed Historic Sistrunk Community Council, which is made up of local homeowner, business and nonprofit groups.
The items could include pictures, memorabilia and stories of Historic Sistrunk’s contributions to Broward County. Oral-history interviews will also be conducted. Organizers are seeking “items that highlight the history of people, businesses, churches, schools, government, social events, weather and other notable accomplishments” of the Northwest Sixth Street [Sistrunk Boulevard] community.
The items will be used on a future website, www.historicsistrunk.com, expected to be online by December, and possibly in a temporary or permanent exhibition. For information, call 754-800-4730, or email historicsistrunk@gmail.com.
